Description
Maupertuis Les Pierres Noires is a natural Gamay from Jean Maupertuis, a former computer scientist who now farms 3.8 hectares in the volcanic Auvergne, in the communes of Saint-Georges-sur-Allier and La Roche Noire. The wine comes from old vines rooted in basalt, the dark volcanic rock that gives the cuvee its name and lends the wine a distinct stony, mineral character. Maupertuis farms biodynamically and works with minimal intervention. The grapes are fermented by carbonic maceration, where whole bunches ferment in a sealed tank under carbon dioxide before pressing, a method that emphasises bright fruit and floral aromas while keeping tannins low. The result is a light, energetic red. Expect a bright ruby colour, a nose of raspberry, cherry and rose, and a fresh, juicy palate with crunchy red fruit, lively acidity, a peppery lift and a mineral, faintly earthy finish. Serve cool, at around 13 degrees, without decanting. It is a good match for roast chicken, charcuterie and lighter fish, and drinks well on its own.
