An easygoing Dominican solera blend at 40%, mild vanilla, light wood and dried herbs with a tobacco edge, built as a workhorse mixer for Dark and Stormy or cola rather than a neat sipper.
Description
Matusalem Solera 7 is a Dominican column-still rum assembled by the solera method, the fractional system borrowed from sherry where younger spirit is fed into older casks over time. The seven on the label points to the solera rather than a flat age statement, so it is best read as a young, lightly mature blend carrying a trace of older rum.
The profile is mild and unfussy: vanilla, light oak and tobacco on the nose, a softly sweet, woody palate with a touch of tropical fruit, and a short finish of tobacco and vanilla. It is built for length rather than contemplation, sitting comfortably in a Dark and Stormy, mojito or rum and cola where its gentle sweetness and light wood do their work. As a neat pour it is pleasant but plain, which is exactly the brief for a cocktail rum at this price.
