A Dominican extra anejo from Matusalem, the Gran Reserva French Oak Enigma finished in ex-Bordeaux wine wood, a molasses ron of caramel, vanilla, raisin and dried fruit that drinks smooth and sweet at 40%.
Description
Matusalem traces its name to Cuban roots but now produces in the Dominican Republic, working in the soft Spanish style from a molasses base. This Gran Reserva Enigma takes the house solera leaning blend and gives it a French oak finish in ex-Bordeaux wine casks, adding a vinous layer to the familiar profile.
The wine cask deepens an already rich, dessert like rum. Wood, caramel, vanilla and dried fruit fill the nose, leading into a palate of dried fruit, caramel, vanilla and raisin, with the same sweet, fruity notes carrying into the finish. It is smooth and clearly on the sweet side, with the sugar status undeclared and the character reading rounded rather than dry. At 40% it is gentle and approachable, the Bordeaux finish lending a touch of red fruit interest. A comfortable after dinner pour for those who like their Dominican ron soft, sweet and fruit driven.
