Mathilde Chapoutier makes this single plot Languedoc red from Garnacha and Syrah, aged six months in old stone vats rather than oak. It is fresh and easy drinking, with red berry, cherry and a peppery, herbal lift.
Description
Mathilde Chapoutier, of the Rhone winemaking family, sources this red from a single Languedoc vineyard under her own selection of approachable, plot specific wines. It blends Garnacha and Syrah, the classic Mediterranean pairing of the south of France, where the warm, sunny climate ripens both grapes fully and the garrigue scrubland lends its herbal signature. Rather than new oak, the wine ages six months in old stone vats, a neutral vessel that shapes texture without adding wood flavour, keeping the fruit fresh and the wine direct. That choice suits the easy drinking brief, retaining the bright primary aromatics and supple tannins. In the glass it shows a bright red with aromas of red berries and cherry over black pepper, dried herbs and a stony, earthy note. The Syrah brings the pepper and dark fruit, the Garnacha the round, juicy red fruit and warmth, finishing on a savoury, herbal close at fourteen and a half percent. Serve at sixteen degrees, lightly cool if you prefer; it is an easygoing match for grilled meats and Mediterranean cooking.
