Mathilde Chapoutier makes this Côtes du Rhône from Grenache and Syrah, organic and bottled without added sulphites. Five months in concrete keep it bright, giving red berry, plum and a peppery, garrigue character.
Description
Mathilde Chapoutier built this Côtes du Rhône from Grenache and Syrah, the two anchor grapes of the southern Rhône, and made it as an organic wine bottled without added sulphites. The vines grow on the warm, stony soils of the southern Rhône, where rolled pebbles and clay store daytime heat and the dry, sunny climate ripens Grenache to its plump red fruit while Syrah brings colour and pepper. The mistral wind keeps the vines healthy and the grapes clean, useful for a low-intervention, no-added-sulphur wine that depends on sound fruit. The wine is raised for five months in concrete tanks rather than oak, which preserves the bright fruit and the herbal garrigue character without any wood flavour, while the inert vessel allows a gentle softening of texture. With no added sulphites it is best drunk young and fresh. The colour is bright red. The nose is red berry and plum with black pepper, dried herbs and a touch of liquorice. The palate is juicy and medium bodied, with soft tannins, fresh acidity and a savoury, peppery finish. Serve at 15 to 16 degrees, lightly chilled if you like. It suits grilled lamb, roast pork and herb-roasted vegetables.
