A 25 year old heavy-marked Caroni from Master of Malt with a strong Oloroso finish, a tannic, oily beast of polish, tar and smoke, bottled unsweetened at a towering 61 percent from the 1997 vintage.
Description
Caroni shut in 2003, and this 1997 column-distilled single cask carries the heavy mark prized by collectors, bottled by Master of Malt with a pronounced Oloroso sherry finish. At a full 61 percent and unsweetened, this is the industrial Caroni in its most uncompromising form after 25 years.
The nose is balanced but dense, polish and tar over wood, while the palate is oily and warm with that tarry, woody backbone and the dry-sweet pull of the sherry cask. The finish is heavily tannic and smoky with a nutty edge. Distilled from Trinidadian molasses on a column still and matured in ex-bourbon before the Oloroso finish, it is a powerful, savoury monster rather than an easy sipper, tannic and intense with the diesel-and-smoke signature of heavy Trinidad. One for those who want Caroni at full volume, dry and demanding.
