Description
Nebbiolo is the great red grape of northern Italy, and Massolino, a family estate in Serralunga d'Alba, shows that it can shine beyond the Barolo and Barbaresco zones. This Langhe Nebbiolo comes from vineyards in the wider appellation and is aged twelve months in oak barrels. Nebbiolo is late ripening and demanding, needing a long season to develop fully, and Piedmont's continental climate, with warm days and cool nights and often morning fog over the vineyards, allows the grape to build its trademark aromatics while holding on to acidity. The calcareous soils of the Langhe contribute a savoury, mineral character. Barrel ageing softens Nebbiolo's naturally firm tannins through slow oxygen exchange and adds a light spice while keeping the fruit and floral notes intact. The colour is a pale garnet, typical of the grape, with aromas of red cherry, red berries, rose and dried herbs over leather and earth. The palate is medium to full bodied, with fresh acidity, firm grippy tannins and a long, savoury finish. Serve at 16 to 18 degrees, decanted, with braised meats, game or mushroom dishes.
