Massolino make this Barolo in Serralunga d’Alba, the Piedmont village best known for structured Nebbiolo. Grown on limestone soils and aged thirty months in barrel, it shows red cherry, rose, tar and a firm, savoury grip.
Description
Massolino are a four generation family estate in Serralunga d'Alba, the Piedmont commune that many regard as the purest expression of Barolo. The estate dates to 1896 and holds some of the zone's best crus. Serralunga's soils are rich in limestone, which together with the high, cool sites gives Nebbiolo its firm structure, high acidity and long ageing potential. Nebbiolo is a pale but powerful grape, and this wine ages thirty months in barrel, where extended time and slow oxygen exchange resolve its formidable tannins and bring out the savoury, perfumed character of the variety. The colour is a translucent garnet that lightens at the rim with age. The nose is classic Nebbiolo, with red cherry, dried rose, tar, leather and a turn of earth, while the palate is firm and structured, with high acidity, grippy tannins and a long, savoury finish marked by liquorice. Serve at 16 to 18 degrees and decant for one to two hours. It is built for rich, savoury dishes.
