Description
Masseria Setteporte farms on the slopes of Mount Etna, the active volcano on Sicily's eastern coast, where Nerello Mascalese is the signature red grape of the Etna Rosso appellation. The soils here are volcanic, a free-draining mix of decomposed lava, ash and sand that is poor in nutrients and rich in minerals, which gives low yields, fine tannin and the salty, smoky character that marks the wine. Vineyards sit at altitude on terraced slopes, and the large diurnal swing between hot days and cold nights preserves acidity and aromatic lift through a long, late harvest. Farming is organic and the wine is certified vegan. After fermentation on skins, the wine spends around twelve months in oak, which softens its naturally firm tannin and adds a light spice without covering the fruit. Nerello Mascalese is often compared to Nebbiolo and Pinot Noir for its pale colour and savoury frame. Expect a translucent ruby wine with red cherry, red currant and dried herbs over smoke, earth and a stony, saline mineral note. The palate is fresh and structured, with bright acidity and fine, grippy tannin. Serve at 16C with roast pork, game birds and mushroom dishes.
