Description
Masseria Setteporte sits on the south western slopes of Mount Etna in Sicily, near Biancavilla, and this organic Etna Rosso is made from the volcano's two native grapes, Nerello Mascalese and the softer Nerello Cappuccio. Etna is a high altitude vineyard area on the side of an active volcano; the cool mountain climate, the wide day to night temperature swing and the dark, mineral rich volcanic soils give wines that are pale but firm, fresh and savoury, often compared to Nebbiolo. Nerello Mascalese ripens late and holds high acidity, while the volcanic ground lends a smoky, mineral character. The wine spends twelve months in oak, then eight months in bottle before release; the barrel time softens the tannin through slow oxygen exchange, and the bottle ageing lets the wine settle and integrate. The colour is a translucent ruby. The nose shows red cherry, red berries and dried herbs, with smoke, black pepper and an earthy, stony note. The palate is medium bodied and structured, with crisp acidity, fine grippy tannin and a long, mineral finish. Serve at 16 to 17C. It suits roast meat and earthy dishes.
