Massaluca is the Roqueta family’s Terra Alta project, based in Pobla de Massaluca at around 400 metres. This young blend of Garnacha Blanca and Macabeo is fresh and unoaked, with green apple, pear and a light herbal, saline lift.
Description
Massaluca is a project the Roqueta family began in 2019 in Pobla de Massaluca, in the inland Catalan appellation of D.O. Terra Alta. The village sits at around 400 metres above sea level, and the wines are built around the region's traditional white grapes. This blend of Garnacha Blanca and Macabeo comes off limestone and clay soils under a Mediterranean climate, where altitude and the dry, cooling Cierzo wind that sweeps the region keep the fruit fresh and the acidity firm through a warm summer. Garnacha Blanca brings body and orchard fruit, while Macabeo adds a floral lift and helps preserve freshness. The wine is made in a young, direct style with no oak, so the emphasis stays on primary fruit and the character of the site. It is bottled early to keep its freshness. The wine is pale straw and opens with green apple, pear, lemon and white flowers over a light, saline, herbal base. The palate is dry, crisp and easy, with fresh acidity, a clean mid weight and a straightforward, faintly herbal finish. Serve well chilled at 9 to 11 degrees. It makes a versatile aperitif and everyday table white for fish and lighter dishes.
