Heretat Mascorrubí farms organically on Catalan land tied to the vine since 1279, reviving the nearly forgotten Moneu grape. This light red ages six months on its lees, showing ripe raspberry, wild cherry and a garrigue-like herbal lift at a gentle 11.4 per cent.
Description
Mascorrubí Moneu comes from Heretat Mascorrubí in D.O. Catalunya, where owner Ernest Pérez-Mas works land linked to viticulture since 1279. The wine is built around Moneu, a local variety nearly lost to time and now replanted as part of the estate's focus on indigenous grapes. The vineyards are farmed organically on Mediterranean soils, where warm days and the influence of nearby hills and coastal air keep the fruit fresh and the alcohol low, here just 11.4 per cent. After fermentation the wine rests six months on its lees, the spent yeast cells, which adds gentle texture and breadth to a naturally light-framed red while softening any sharp edges. The result is bright ruby, with a nose of ripe raspberry, wild cherry and red currant lifted by wild thyme and dried Mediterranean herbs. The palate is light and juicy, with soft tannins, fresh red fruit and a savoury, scrubland character running to a clean finish. Serve lightly cool, around fourteen to sixteen degrees. It works well with lighter meats, charcuterie and herb-driven vegetable dishes.
