An 18 Year Old Port Mourant at cask strength, dry and roasty with anise, pineapple and smoky wood over a leathery, liquorice-laced finish, a single port cask bottled by Masam at 53.5% with little sweetness.
Description
Masam bottled this 2003 Port Mourant in Silvano's Collection, a single port cask 18 Year Old at a cask strength 53.5%. PM is the icon and the heaviest of the Demerara marques, distilled on the double wooden greenheart pot still, and this continental aged release shows its classic, roasty profile without much sweetness to cushion it.
The nose leads with pineapple, anise and dried fruit over a citrus lift, and the palate turns to liquorice, leather and roasted, smoky wood, the port cask adding a subtle dark fruit edge rather than dominating. The finish stays dry with liquorice, anise and spice. A faint tropical fruit sweetness appears late, but this is firmly a focused, contemplative sipper, the kind of Port Mourant that rewards attention rather than charming a crowd. The strength sits a touch forward, so a drop of water helps. For drinkers who already enjoy the dry, herbal continental PM style, this is a well-made, characterful example.
