Mas Llunes Esventat Tinto 2024

Mas Llunes is a family winery in Garriguella, in the D.O. Emporda in the far north-east of Catalonia, close to the French border. The region is shaped by the Tramuntana, a dry northern wind that gives the local word esventat, meaning swept by the wind. That wind keeps the vineyards healthy and dry, lowering disease pressure and letting the fruit ripen cleanly. Garnacha here grows on slate and granite soils under a warm Mediterranean climate tempered by the wind. This 2024 is made for early drinking, vinified in stainless steel without oak ageing so the fruit stays primary and fresh, the cool, reductive handling protecting aroma. The colour is bright cherry red. The nose is open and fruity, with strawberry, cherry and red currant over a stony, herbal base. The palate is light to medium bodied and juicy, with soft tannin, fresh acidity and a peppery, savoury finish. At 13.5 percent it is an everyday red that takes a light chill well. Serve at 14 to 15 degrees with grilled vegetables, charcuterie, roast chicken or pork.
