Description
Mas Llunes works in the D.O. Emporda in the far northeast of Catalonia, where the vineyards run down towards the Costa Brava and the Mediterranean. This rosé is made from Garnacha Roja, the pink-skinned mutation of Grenache traditional to the area, and bottled as an organic, vegan wine. Emporda is shaped by the Tramuntana, the cold dry north wind that sweeps down from the Pyrenees and keeps the vines healthy and the grapes free of disease while concentrating the fruit. The soils are a mix of granite and slate over alluvial gravels near the coast, giving good drainage and a saline, herbal character from the garrigue scrub and sea air. The rosé is made by direct press of the pale-skinned Garnacha Roja and held in stainless steel to keep it fresh and primary, with no oak. Expect a pale, bright pink, a nose of white peach, red berries and citrus peel with white flowers and a herbal lift, and a dry, light palate with a clean saline finish that reflects the coastal site. Serve well chilled at 8 to 10 degrees.
