Mas Estela works biodynamically on the rugged Empordà coast, metres from the Mediterranean and exposed to the Tramontana. This Garnacha and Syrah red sees twenty months in French oak, showing ripe wild berries, a citrus lift and toasted, savoury depth.
Description
Mas Estela Selva de Mar is a biodynamic red from D.O. Empordà, made from vines planted on the steep Catalan coast just a few metres from the sea. The maritime setting and the strong, dry Tramontana wind keep the fruit clean and concentrate it, while the sunshine drives full ripeness. Garnacha and Syrah are picked at optimal maturity and hand sorted, then destemmed and given a cold soak before fermentation and maceration in stainless steel, a gentle approach that preserves fruit and freshness. The wine is aged for twenty months in French oak, long enough for the tannins to round out and for a layer of toast and spice to settle in. It is deep red in the glass. The nose leads with ripe wild red berries, cherry and plum, lifted by a citrus freshness and backed by roasted, nutty oak. The palate is generous and warm at 14.5% alcohol, with ripe tannin, a herbal, peppery edge and a long savoury finish. Serve at 16 to 17 degrees in a large glass. It suits roast and grilled meats.
