Description
Mas Estela works in the D.O. Emporda, the windswept north-east corner of Catalonia where the Pyrenees meet the Mediterranean, and Gorgs is a varietal Garnacha. The region's poor, schist and granite soils and the drying Tramuntana wind reduce disease pressure and concentrate the fruit, while the warm maritime climate ripens the Garnacha fully, showing in the 14.5% alcohol, and the coastal influence lends a saline freshness. The wine spends six months in stainless steel on its fine lees. The inert tank keeps the ripe fruit primary and free of oak, while ageing on the lees adds texture and a subtle savoury depth as the spent yeast cells break down and release mannoproteins, rounding the mid palate. The colour is a deep, bright red, the nose leads with ripe red cherry, blackberry and a herbal, garrigue lift, and the palate is full but fresh, the soft tannins framed by the lees-derived texture and a clean, saline finish. Serve at 15 to 16C. It suits grilled meats, charcuterie and rice dishes.
