Mas Donis Rosat comes from Celler de Capçanes in Montsant, a Garnacha-led blend off clay soils and granite terraces. Hand harvested and made without pressing, it gives ripe strawberry, cherry and a peppery edge from the Syrah.
Description
Celler de Capçanes is based in the village of Capçanes in Montsant, the Catalan appellation that wraps around Priorat in Tarragona. This rosé is built from Garnacha at 80 percent, with Syrah and Merlot making up the rest. The Garnacha comes from vines between 10 and 25 years old, planted on clay soils and granite terraces that drain well and hold the vine's vigour in check, concentrating the fruit. The harvest is done by hand in the second half of September. For the rosé, the grapes are not pressed; the free-run juice is bled off the skins, a saignée approach that takes gentle colour and fruit without harsh extraction. Cool fermentation in stainless steel keeps the aromatics fresh in a warm inland climate. The colour is bright pink. The nose shows ripe strawberry, red cherry and a little plum, with a peppery note from the Syrah. The palate is dry and fruit driven, fuller than a pale coastal rosé, with fresh acidity and a clean finish. Serve at 8 to 10 degrees. It has the body for grilled pork, roast chicken and tomato-based dishes.
