Mas Doix makes this single-varietal Garnacha from an old, classified vineyard in Priorat, farmed biodynamically on the region’s slate llicorella soils. Twelve months in barrel gives a deep, structured red of dark fruit, liquorice and a smoky mineral depth.
Description
Mas Doix farms old vines in Priorat, in inland Tarragona between Montserrat and Molla, working biodynamically and organically. This wine is a single-varietal Garnacha Tinta from a Vinya Classificada, an officially classified old vineyard, and it carries the concentration that the appellation's low-yielding old vines and harsh terrain produce. The defining feature of Priorat is its llicorella soil, a fractured slate and quartzite that forces the roots deep in search of water and gives the wines their dark fruit, firm structure and unmistakable smoky minerality. Hot, dry summers and steep terraces concentrate the fruit. The wine is aged twelve months in barrel, where slow oxygen exchange builds and softens the tannin while adding a fine spice frame. The colour is deep and dark. The nose shows ripe plum and dark berries with liquorice, black pepper and a smoky, stony note. The palate is full and structured, with firm but ripe tannin, good freshness and a long mineral finish. Serve at 17 to 18 degrees, decanting an hour ahead. It is built for roasted and grilled red meats.
