Cal Pla makes Mas d’en Compte in D.O.Q. Priorat from Garnacha, Cariñena and Cabernet Sauvignon on the region’s licorella slate. Fourteen months in French oak give a powerful, structured red of red and black fruit with freshness and grip.
Description
Mas d'en Compte is a Priorat red from Cal Pla, a family estate working the steep terraces of one of Spain's most demanding appellations. It blends Garnacha and Cariñena with Cabernet Sauvignon, grown on the licorella slate that defines Priorat, a fractured black and red schist that forces vine roots deep in search of water and yields tiny, concentrated crops. The hot dry summers ripen the fruit to full power while the poor mineral soils and steep slopes give the wine its firm structure and savoury depth. It ages fourteen months in French oak, where slow oxygen exchange builds a fine grained tannin frame and adds spice and a smoky note. The result combines the weight expected of Priorat with a freshness and agility that keep it lively. The nose shows red and black fruits with pepper, liquorice and a mineral, smoky edge, while the palate is full bodied and structured, with ripe fruit, firm grippy tannins and an earthy core that reflects the slate. The finish is long and warming at 15 percent alcohol. Serve at 16 to 18 degrees and decant an hour ahead. It calls for rich roast and braised meats.
