Description
Celler de Capçanes is a cooperative founded in 1933 by five families in the village of Capçanes, in the south of D.O. Montsant in Catalonia, an appellation that wraps around the better known Priorat. This is its everyday red, a blend of Garnacha, Cariñena, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon offered in a three litre bag in box, a format that keeps the wine fresh for weeks once opened by stopping air reaching it. Montsant has a warm Mediterranean climate tempered by altitude and cooling night breezes off the surrounding hills, which helps the Grenache and Carignan ripen fully while holding onto freshness. Soils of clay, limestone and pockets of licorella slate stress the vines and concentrate the fruit. Garnacha leads with ripe red fruit and warmth, Cariñena adds colour and acidity, and the Bordeaux grapes lend structure. Barrel ageing rounds the tannins through gentle oxygen exchange and adds a light spice frame. The wine is bright ruby, with a nose of ripe plum, red berries and a floral lift over peppery, herbal notes. The palate is medium to full bodied, fresh and fruity, with soft tannin and a clean finish. Serve at 16 to 17 degrees. It suits grilled meat and hearty everyday cooking.
