Description
Mas Collet is a blended red from Celler de Capçanes in D.O. Montsant, Catalonia. The blend is led by Cariñena with Cabernet Sauvignon and Garnacha and small amounts of Syrah and Merlot, a mix of local and international varieties grown around Capçanes in Tarragona. The estate sits among a patchwork of soils, chalk, slate and clay, and that variety shows in the wine, each adding a different note of fruit, structure or freshness. The Mediterranean climate ripens the fruit fully, while the poorer soils keep yields in check. The harvest is picked by hand through September and October, and each variety is vinified separately before blending. The wine completes malolactic fermentation to soften the acidity, then ages nine months in French and American oak, enough to settle the tannins and add light spice while keeping the fruit fresh. The colour is deep ruby. The nose shows red berry, plum and cherry over dried herbs and a touch of oak. The palate is medium to full bodied, the tannins ripe and the structure balanced, the finish savoury. Serve at 17C. Pairs well with grilled meats and aged cheese.
