Martín Códax makes this Godello in D.O. Monterrei, the warm inland corner of Galicia. Eight months on its lees give a rounded white with white peach, pear and a savoury herbal lift of fennel and rosemary.
Description
Con da Moura comes from the village of Medeiro in the west of D.O. Monterrei, an inland Galician appellation with a long winemaking history and a warmer, drier climate than the coastal zones. Godello is Galicia's most structured white grape, and here it is grown on the region's granite and slate influenced soils, which lend the wine a mineral cut alongside its riper fruit. Monterrei sits in a sheltered valley where warm days and cooler nights allow the grapes to ripen fully while holding onto acidity, giving a wine with more weight and stone fruit than a typical cool coastal Galician white. It is aged for around eight months on its fine lees, a process where the spent yeast cells gradually break down and release compounds that add body, a gentle savoury character and a creamier texture without any oak. The wine is pale straw with golden lights, and the nose leads with white peach, pear and melon lifted by fennel and rosemary. The palate is dry and rounded, with ripe orchard and stone fruit balanced by fresh acidity and a saline, herbal finish. Serve at 10 to 12 degrees. It suits richer fish and white meat dishes.
