Martín Berdugo Joven is an unoaked Ribera del Duero red made entirely from Tempranillo. The fruit comes from a 104 hectare estate at 800 metres, farmed for low yields, giving a bright, fresh wine of red berries, cherry and a peppery lift.
Description
Martín Berdugo Joven is a young red from the D.O. Ribera del Duero, made by the Martín Berdugo winery from 100 percent Tempranillo. The grapes come from the winery's own 104 hectare estate at 800 metres above sea level, where the extreme continental climate typical of Ribera brings hot days and cold nights. That diurnal range is the key to this style, with cool nights locking in acidity and the deep colour and red fruit aromatics of the grape, while the elevation slows ripening and keeps the wine fresh. The vines are farmed for low yields, concentrating flavour in each bunch. There is no oak ageing here, so the wine is bottled young to show pure fruit rather than barrel character, the absence of wood keeping the tannins soft and the palate juicy. The colour is bright violet ruby. The nose leads with strawberry, raspberry and cherry, with a touch of plum and ground pepper. The palate is medium bodied and lively, the acidity making it easy to drink, finishing clean on red currant and a hint of earth. Serve lightly chilled at 14 to 16 degrees. It suits charcuterie, grilled pork and tomato based dishes.
