Description
Cristoforo is a young red from the D.O.Ca. Rioja, made by Belasco and Berasategui in the orbit of chef Martin Berasategui, from Tempranillo with Cabernet Sauvignon. Rioja sits in a sheltered valley in northern Spain, where the Cantabrian mountains temper the Atlantic and the Mediterranean climates meet, giving a long, even ripening season. Tempranillo provides the red fruit, acidity and supple structure that define the region, while the Cabernet Sauvignon adds depth, colour and a firmer frame. As a fresh, fruit driven Rioja from a recent vintage, this leads with bright primary fruit rather than long oak, keeping it open and approachable young. The colour is bright cherry red. The nose shows red cherry, ripe plum and a touch of sweet spice, while the palate is medium bodied and supple, with soft tannin, fresh acidity and a clean, savoury finish. It is an easygoing Rioja for everyday meals. Serve at 16 to 17 degrees. It pairs well with lamb chops and grilled meats.
