Description
Mars Tsunuki The First is the inaugural named edition from the Tsunuki distillery in Kagoshima prefecture, operated by Hombo Shuzo since 2016. Distilled across vintages 2016 and 2017 and bottled in 2020, it represents the earliest publicly released whisky from this southern Kyushu site, making it a record of how the new distillery's spirit performed in its first years of maturation.
Matured in Ex-Bourbon casks, the release shows the character expected of young Tsunuki spirit: vibrant citric freshness, fresh and dried fruit, and a trace of yeastiness from the early distillate sit alongside honey sweetness from the wood. At cask strength of 59% the new wood influence is present and honest, reflecting the distillery's age at the time of bottling. Kagoshima's warm, humid climate accelerates maturation, and even at this age the whisky carries a satisfying weight.
