Description
Mars May & Luna is a no age statement blend from Hombo Shuzo, pairing whisky from their Tsunuki distillery in Kagoshima and Mars Shinshu in Nagano, released in 2023 for the Japan market. Like its sibling May & Hana, the May & Luna expression is designed for the domestic Japanese market, with the Luna name evoking a nocturnal companion to the daytime floral theme of Hana.
Maturation is in Ex-Bourbon casks, and the flavour data notes honey and smoke. At 43%, the smoke is a gentle presence rather than a dominant character, sitting behind the sweetness typical of Ex-Bourbon ageing in Hombo Shuzo's hands. The warmth that Tsunuki's humid, southerly climate contributes to the blend adds a soft richness, while the Mars Shinshu component brings the cleaner highland note that defines the Nagano distillery's mountain character.
