Description
Mars Shinshu, owned by Hombo Shuzo and distilling in Miyada, Nagano, produced this single malt in 2017. After six years the spirit was drawn from an Oloroso sherry hogshead, a cask type that departs from the bourbon barrels more commonly seen across the distillery's independent releases, and bottled at cask strength at 57% by La Maison du Whisky as a France-market single cask.
Oloroso sherry hogsheads typically give dried dark fruit, raisin and gentle spice, enriching a spirit and deepening its colour considerably. Where the distillery's bourbon-cask releases tend toward vanilla and fresh fruit, the sherry wood here steers the six year old toward a more complex, darker profile. At 57% the bottling has the weight to carry the wood's influence without losing its structure.
