Description
Mars 2016 (LMDW) is a single cask single malt from Mars Shinshu, Hombo Shuzo's Central Alps distillery at Miyada in Nagano, selected by La Maison du Whisky alongside a companion cask from the same vintage and bottled in 2022 at 61% cask strength for the French market. Both LMDW 2016 bottlings come from First-Fill Bourbon casks, but the individual cask character diverges noticeably between the two.
This 61% bottling shows solvent and vegetative notes on top of the expected bourbon wood contribution, a profile reflecting the more angular, resinous characteristics that can emerge from certain First-Fill casks when the distillery's clean spirit has not yet fully integrated with the wood. Six years in an active first-fill cask at the cool, stable temperatures of the Nagano highlands preserves these sharper edges, making this a more austere and characterful single cask than the 60% companion bottling from the same year.
