Marqués de Vizhoja is a fresh Galician white bottled at Finca La Moreira in Arbo, first made in 1968 by Mariano Peláez. Built on traditional local grapes, it shows green apple and juicy pear over a dry, citrus-edged palate.
Description
Marqués de Vizhoja is a dry white from Galicia, bottled at Finca La Moreira in Arbo, in the Pontevedra province, by the winery Mariano Peláez founded and first bottled in 1968. It carries no denomination of origin and is made from traditional national grapes to a recipe now upheld by his sons Jorge and Javier. The vineyards sit in the damp, Atlantic-influenced far south of Galicia, where cool nights and free-draining soils hold the grapes' natural acidity and keep the fruit fresh. Vinification is protective and reductive, fermented cool in stainless steel with no oak so the primary fruit and citrus stay to the fore. The wine is pale yellow with a green tint. The nose leads with green apple and juicy pear, lifted by white flowers and a clean citrus edge. The palate is dry and balanced, with lemon and citrus-peel freshness and a light saline finish that keeps it easy to drink. Serve chilled at around 8 to 10 degrees in a white-wine glass. It works as an aperitif and alongside lighter seafood and salads.
