Marqués de Riscal makes this organic Verdejo in Rueda from vines over fifteen years old on stony continental soils. Fermented young and unoaked, it is fresh and vivid, with tropical fruit, lemon, green apple and the grape trademark herbal snap.
Description
Marqués de Riscal Verdejo is a single variety white from D.O. Rueda, made by a winery long established in Rioja. The vineyards have been certified organic since 2018 and the vines are over fifteen years old, planted on stony soils low in organic matter. Rueda sits high on the Castilian plateau under an extreme continental climate, with hot days and cold nights: that wide diurnal range ripens the fruit while preserving the acidity and aromatic detail that define Verdejo. The stony, poor soils drain freely and keep yields low and the fruit concentrated. The wine is fermented young in stainless steel with no oak, which keeps the fruit primary and the finish crisp, and holds on to the grape's herbal edge. The wine is bright straw yellow. The nose is fresh and vivid, led by tropical fruit, lemon and green apple with a green herbal lift. The palate is juicy and direct, the fruit carried on brisk acidity to a dry finish with the faintly bitter twist typical of the variety. Serve well chilled at 8 to 10 degrees in a white wine glass. It suits white fish, shellfish, green salads and fresh goat cheese.
