Marqués de Riscal makes this Rueda Sauvignon Blanc from vines averaging over twenty-five years. Cold soaked and slowly fermented cool to protect aromatics, it is crisp and green, with lemon, elderflower and ripe melon.
Description
Marqués de Riscal was a pioneer of white wine in Rueda, and this bottling is its varietal Sauvignon Blanc, a grape the house helped establish in the region. The fruit comes from estate vineyards averaging more than twenty-five years of age, planted on the stony, gravel-strewn soils of the high Castilian plateau. Rueda's altitude, above seven hundred metres, is the defining factor: hot days ripen the grapes fully while cold nights preserve acidity and lock in aromatic freshness, giving the wine its balance of ripe fruit and cut. In the cellar the grapes are cold soaked before pressing to draw out aroma, then fermented slowly at low temperature to keep those delicate compounds intact, with no oak. Expect a pale yellow colour with green tints, an expressive nose of lemon, elderflower and ripe melon with a grassy, green edge typical of the variety, and a dry, crisp palate with fresh acidity and a clean, citrus finish. Serve well chilled at around 8C. Its freshness makes it a natural aperitif and a good all-round white for the table.
