Marqués de Riscal makes this pale Rioja rosado at El Ciego by the saignée method, bleeding off free-run must from Tempranillo and Viura. Young vines and cool fermentation give a fresh, delicate wine of strawberry, raspberry and white peach.
Description
Marqués de Riscal is based in El Ciego in the south of Rioja Alavesa, one of the historic estates of the region. This rosado is made mainly from Tempranillo with Viura and small amounts of Malvasía and Garnacha Blanca, from young vines of around 15 years. Production uses the saignée or bleeding method, in which a portion of free-run must is run off the skins early, before pressing, to obtain a clear liquid without solid residue. That gentle approach takes a pale colour and delicate fruit from the skins. Cool fermentation in stainless steel preserves the primary aromatics and keeps the wine fresh, while the altitude and limestone-influenced soils of Alavesa hold the natural acidity. The wine is certified vegan, made without animal-derived fining agents. The colour is pale pink. The nose is fresh and lightly floral, with strawberry, raspberry and white peach over a white flower note. The palate is dry, crisp and delicate, with bright lemony acidity and a clean finish. Serve well chilled at 8 to 10 degrees. It is a good aperitif and suits white fish, shellfish and light dishes.
