Description
Celler de Capcanes is a cooperative in the village of Capcanes, in D.O. Montsant, on the slopes that adjoin Priorat in southern Catalonia. Marmellans Rosat blends Garnacha Peluda, the hairy leaved Grenache prized for its lower alcohol and freshness, at around 80 per cent with Syrah at 20 per cent. The fruit comes from old vines between 30 and 60 years old, planted on clay and granite soils in the Falset subzone. Montsant's warm Mediterranean climate is tempered by altitude and sea breezes, while old vines and poor soils keep yields low and flavours concentrated. The wine is made by the bleeding, or saignee, method, running off pink juice from lightly crushed red grapes, then fermented young and unoaked to keep the fruit bright and primary. The colour is an intense, clean rose pink. The nose is fruity and very fresh, with cherry, red berries and red currant over a faint peppery, herbal edge. The palate has a good entry, light yet with body from the old vines, clean acidity and a long finish. Serve at 10 degrees.
