Description
Markus Molitor produces Haus Klosterberg Riesling Trocken within the VDP Mosel-Saar-Ruwer, from an estate his family has run for eight generations. Markus took charge in 1984 at the age of twenty with a single ambition, to make the finest Riesling in the Mosel. The vines sit on Devonian slate, some plots on markedly steep slopes. Slate warms quickly in the day and holds that heat overnight, helping the fruit ripen fully while the cool Mosel climate and wide diurnal range preserve the sharp natural acidity that defines the region. This is the entry point to the range, a dry Riesling vinified to keep transparency to site rather than to add weight, so the mineral, stony character of the slate carries straight through. The colour is pale with a green tint. The nose leads with green apple, lemon and white peach, backed by pear and a touch of white flowers. The palate is light, taut and precise, the fruit framed by racy acidity and a saline, slate-driven finish. At 11.5% it stays fresh and low in alcohol. Serve at 9 to 11 degrees in a white wine glass.
