Description
Markus Molitor draws this Auslese from Erdener Prälat, one of the great walled sites of the Mosel, a small steep amphitheatre of red Devonian slate above the river. The rock stores heat through the day and radiates it back at night, ripening Riesling fully on a slope too severe for machines. The three star marking and golden capsule signal Molitor's sweetest, most concentrated bottling from selected botrytis affected berries picked in successive passes. Fermentation stops naturally while a large share of grape sugar remains, leaving the wine at 7 percent alcohol with intense residual sweetness. Time on the fine lees adds texture and a savoury undertone that balances the fruit. The Mosel's cool climate is the key, holding acidity high so the wine never feels heavy. Expect a bright golden colour, a nose of white peach, apricot, honey and spring flowers, and a palate that is lush and sweet yet cut clean by lemon and ginger acidity into a long finish. Serve well chilled at 8 to 10 degrees.
