Marimar Torres makes this organic Pinot Noir at her Russian River Valley estate in California. Ten months in oak give an elegant, savoury red of cherry, red berry and spice, with the bright acidity and earthy depth of cool, fog-cooled vineyards.
Description
Mas Cavalls comes from Marimar Estate, the Russian River Valley winery of Marimar Torres, a member of the Catalan Torres family who farms her California vineyards organically. The wine is made from Pinot Noir, a thin-skinned variety that demands a cool climate, and the Russian River Valley delivers it through morning fog and ocean influence that slow ripening and preserve acidity. The estate's well-drained Goldridge sandy loam soils restrict vigour and concentrate the fruit. After fermentation the wine is aged for ten months in oak barrels, where slow oxygen exchange softens the tannins and adds a measured spice and vanilla frame that supports rather than covers the fruit. The colour is bright ruby. The nose shows cherry and red berry with earthy, floral and lightly spiced tones drawn from the variety and the cool site. The palate is elegant and medium-bodied, with fine silky tannin, fresh acidity and a savoury, persistent finish. Serve at 15 to 16 degrees in a Burgundy glass. It is a classic match for roast duck and other game birds.
