Description
Marfil Blanc Clàssic is made by Alella Vinícola in the small appellation of Alella, just north of Barcelona on the coast. The blend is 90 percent Pansa Blanca, the local name for Xarel·lo, with 10 percent Garnacha Blanca, from organically farmed vineyards. Alella is best known for its sauló, a pale, sandy granite soil that drains very freely and reflects light onto the vines, while the sea breezes and Mediterranean climate keep the whites fresh and aromatic. Pansa Blanca gives citrus, green apple and firm acidity, and the small share of Garnacha Blanca fills out the middle of the palate. The wine is made in a straightforward, protective way and aged for four months in stainless steel, with no oak, so the emphasis stays on primary fruit and freshness. Cool fermentation in steel preserves the delicate aromatics and keeps the wine crisp and clean. The colour is pale lemon. The nose gives green apple, lemon and pear with white flowers and a light herbal note, and the palate is dry, light bodied and brisk, finishing on citrus. Serve it well chilled at around 8 to 10 degrees.
