Marco Ferrari makes this Sassella from Nebbiolo on the vertical stone terraces of Valtellina, in Alpine Lombardy. Eighteen months in barrel give a translucent ruby red, fresh and savoury, with red cherry, rose and a mineral, herbal edge.
Description
Sassella is one of the historic crus of Valtellina, a narrow Alpine valley in Lombardy where Nebbiolo, known locally as Chiavennasca, clings to steep south-facing terraces. Marco Ferrari farms these slopes by hand, the heroic viticulture the valley is known for, with stone terraces holding the vines on rocky, sandy and acidic soils. The high altitude and the strong diurnal swing of the mountains slow ripening and lock in acidity and aromatics, giving a lighter, fresher style of Nebbiolo than the Langhe. The wine ages eighteen months in barrel, where gentle oxygen exchange softens the firm tannin and adds savoury depth without covering the fruit. The colour is a translucent ruby. The nose is vibrant and lifted, with red cherry and berry fruit, rose, dried herbs and a stony, mineral note from the terraced soils. The palate is medium-bodied and fresh, with bright acidity, fine grippy tannin and a peppery, earthy finish that reflects the Alpine site. Serve at 16 degrees. It suits roast poultry, game and mushroom dishes.
