Mara Martin is the Martin Codax group’s Godello from D.O. Monterrei, the driest, warmest corner of Galicia. Fermented in temperature-controlled steel, it is a fresh, aromatic white of white fruit, jasmine and a herbal edge.
Description
Mara Martin is made by the Martin Codax group in the D.O. Monterrei, in the south of Ourense on the Portuguese border. Monterrei is Atlantic in nature but takes a continental influence, giving a drier climate than the rest of Galicia with hotter summers and very cold winters; that wider temperature range ripens the Godello fully while cold nights hold on to the aromatics and acidity. This single-varietal Godello is fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks, which keeps the fermentation slow and cool to protect the delicate aromas, and is then held a short time on its lees for a light texture and savoury depth. It shows a pale colour and an expansive nose of white fruit and jasmine with a herbal nuance and a faint rustic minerality. The palate is fresh and open, the fruit clean and the acidity keeping it lively through the finish. Serve well chilled at 8 to 10 degrees in a standard white glass. Suited to shellfish, white fish and lighter dishes, and a good aperitif.
