Clos Mogador makes Manyetes from Cariñena grown on 80 year old vines at Gratallops, in Priorat. The llicorella slate soils and 18 months in French oak give a dark, structured red of black plum, liquorice and smoky minerality.
Description
Manyetes is a single-variety Cariñena from Clos Mogador, drawn from ten hectares of the same name in Gratallops, a recognised subzone of Priorat. The vineyards are south facing on llicorella, the licorella slate and quartz schist that defines the appellation. These poor, free-draining soils force the roots deep in search of water and yield tiny crops of concentrated fruit, while the dry, sunny climate ripens the grapes fully, hence the 15 percent alcohol. The vines are around 80 years old, which lowers yields further and adds depth. Cariñena holds firm acidity and tannin even at high ripeness, so the wine keeps its grip and freshness. Eighteen months in French oak barrels resolve the considerable tannins through slow oxygen exchange and add a fine spice frame without masking the slate character. The colour is deep, near opaque ruby. The nose shows black plum, liquorice, dark chocolate and a smoky, mineral note from the slate. The palate is full bodied and firm, with dense but ripe tannins and a long, savoury, stony finish. Serve at 17 degrees and decant an hour ahead. It suits roast lamb and beef.
