Manutea is a French Polynesian distillery producing rum from fresh-pressed sugarcane juice in the agricole style, far out in the Pacific, and this Extra Vieux X.O. is its most aged expression, matured to bring out richer, sweeter wood character.
The profile sits on the soft, dessert-friendly side: a sweet nose of floral, woody and raisin notes, a palate of honey, brown sugar and barrel, and a finish of caramel, sugarcane, young wood and coconut. At 45% it is rounded and easygoing, a pleasant, drinkable agricole that works as an after-dinner pour rather than a sharp, grassy blanc. A characterful bottle for its remote Tahitian origin, more about gentle sweetness and oak than the dry vegetal snap of the French islands.
