A 15 year old Panamanian Malteco built around caramel and vanilla, soft and sweet in the country’s mellow style, column distilled from molasses and aged in Ex-Bourbon, an easy, gentle and dessert leaning sipper at 41.5%.
Description
Malteco Reserva Maya is a fifteen year old Panamanian rum in the soft, sweet leaning style the country markets so successfully, sourced from one of the large column distilleries that supply much of the region. The age statement promises maturity, and the profile delivers an easy, rounded sweetness.
Distilled on column stills from molasses and aged in Ex-Bourbon oak, it is built simply and effectively around caramelised, vanilla notes on the nose, then caramel and sweetness on the palate. There is little to puzzle over here; the appeal lies in its smooth, gentle, dessert like character. Its sugar status is undisclosed, but the sweetness is forward enough that dosage likely plays a part alongside the oak. A comfortable, mellow Panamanian for those who like their rum soft and sweet rather than dry and structured, an undemanding after dinner pour.
