Malecon 25 Years – Reserva Imperial

Malecon draws on Panama's deep bench of column still rum, distilling from molasses in the soft, mellow tradition the country supplies to much of the rum world. This 25 year old Reserva Imperial spends its time in ex-bourbon casks and arrives at a gentle 40%, built for unhurried sipping rather than power.

The nose offers vanilla, caramel, a nutty edge and warm spice, and the palate stays round with caramel, sweet wood and more of that toasted nuttiness, closing on vanilla, orange peel and coffee. There is sweetness here in the Spanish house style, yet it stops short of cloying, leaving something fruity and balanced rather than syrupy. The long maturation shows as soft oak rather than aggression, making this an approachable neat pour that drinkers newer to aged rum can enjoy without being overwhelmed.
