A higher proof Malecon from Panama, thirteen years in ex-bourbon wood at 50.5%, richer than the house norm with toffee, dried fruit, banana and smoky oak, sweet leaning but carried by real strength.
Description
This Rare Proof 2003 is part of Malecon's stronger Panamanian series, a column still molasses rum given a 13 year statement and bottled at a robust 50.5%. The higher strength sets it apart from the brand's gentler 40% releases, giving the soft Spanish style some extra muscle and length without losing its rounded character.
The nose is generous with toffee, dried fruit, banana and molasses, and the palate stays sweet and woody with burnt sugar and raisin, finishing on honey, fruit and more sweet oak. There is a recognisable sweetness here, and the familiar smoky note that runs through the range, but the elevated proof keeps everything in better balance than the lighter bottlings manage. The result is a fuller, more rewarding sipper that drinks well neat or as a slow mixer, offering richness and a touch of smoke for the price.
