Description
Majas Blanc is an organic white made by Domaine Majas in the VDP Cotes Catalanes, in the Fenouilledes valley of Roussillon. Alain and Agnes Carrere founded the estate in 1992 and reshaped it toward quality with the help of winemaker Tom Lubbe. The blend is Macabeo, Rolle (Vermentino) and white Carignan, grown on the schist and granite soils of these upland slopes. Altitude and cooling breezes off the Pyrenees give a wide diurnal range, so the grapes ripen while holding the acidity that gives Mediterranean whites their freshness. The wine is made without oak and bottled young to keep its fruit and mineral bite, with organic farming in the vineyard and low intervention in the cellar. The colour is pale lemon with green tints. The nose is bright and direct, with lemon, green apple and white flowers over a cool stony note. The palate is dry and lean, melon and pear fruit carried by fresh acidity and a saline, almost salty finish that reflects the poor rocky soils. Serve well chilled at 8 to 10 degrees.
