A blanc agricole from one of Martinique’s larger heritage houses, pressed from fresh sugarcane and rested rather than aged, all fresh-cut grass, lemon and cucumber over sugarcane sap, dry and clean at a gentle 40%.
Description
Maison La Mauny traces its heritage to 1749 at Riviere-Pilote in southern Martinique, one of the island's larger AOC distilleries. This Rhum Blanc Pure Canne is distilled from fresh-pressed sugarcane juice, not molasses, then rested before bottling in the unaged blanc tier rather than sent to oak.
The creole column runs low to keep the green, vegetal congeners in the spirit, which is exactly why the nose leans on cut grass, lemon and fresh cane. The palate is soft and green with cucumber and sugarcane, the finish dry with lime and grass. Unsweetened under AOC rules, it sits at the lighter, more neutral end of the blanc spectrum, which makes it a natural workhorse for a Ti Punch, a mojito or a rhum arrange rather than a contemplative neat pour.
