A thirty-year vieux from Maison La Mauny in Martinique, three decades of tropical ageing softening fresh cane juice into floral, citrus and tropical-fruit spice over a sweet, peppery oak finish at 42%.
Description
Maison La Mauny, one of Martinique's largest distilleries with heritage to 1749, made this Extra Rubis from fresh-pressed sugar-cane juice and aged it thirty years. As a Martinique agricole it sits under the island's AOC, and at thirty tropical years it carries the kind of maturity that the heat and humidity of the Caribbean concentrate well beyond a cool-climate equivalent.
Decades in ex-bourbon oak have rounded the grassy cane base into something soft and aromatic, with floral, citrus and tropical-fruit notes laced with spice on the nose, then nutmeg, pepper and floral spice across the palate. The finish turns sweet, peppery and oaky, the sweetness coming from long wood contact rather than additive. Bottled at 42% and unsweetened, it is a graceful, deeply aged vieux for slow sipping, where the years in cask show in its polish.
