M. Chapoutier farms this Saint-Joseph from Syrah on the steep granite hills of the northern Rhône. Twenty months in oak builds a deep, peppery red of dark plum, black olive and smoked meat, with the firm tension granite gives.
Description
M. Chapoutier has worked the northern Rhône for over two centuries, and Le Clos comes from a single amphitheatre-shaped vineyard in the Saint-Joseph appellation, farmed biodynamically. The steep slopes here are granite, a hard, free draining rock that warms quickly and forces the vines to root deep for water. That stress concentrates the fruit and gives northern Rhône Syrah its firm spine and peppery edge, while the cool continental climate keeps acidity and aromatic lift. The wine spends twenty months in oak barrels, where slow oxygen exchange rounds the tannins and adds a savoury, smoky frame without masking the granite character. It pours a deep purple with crimson highlights, dense and bright in the glass. The nose runs to dark plum, blackberry and black olive, with classic Syrah notes of cracked black pepper, smoked meat, violet and a flinty mineral edge. The palate is full and structured, with ripe but grippy tannins, fresh acidity and a long, savoury finish that carries the peppery, stony signature of the site. At 14 percent it has weight without heat. Serve at 17 to 18 degrees, decant an hour ahead, and pour with red meat or game.
