Description
M. Chapoutier Rasteau Les Gadilles is a southern Rhône red from Maison Chapoutier, the house founded in 1808 and one of the pioneers of biodynamic farming in the region. The vineyards in the Rasteau appellation are worked biodynamically or organically, in keeping with the estate's respect for natural cycles. The blend is led by Grenache with Syrah and Mourvèdre, the classic Rasteau trio. The warm Mediterranean climate and the area's stony, clay-limestone soils ripen Grenache fully, building the wine's generous fruit and alcohol, while the cooling mistral wind keeps the grapes healthy and concentrates flavour. Syrah adds colour, pepper and structure, Mourvèdre brings savoury depth and firmer tannin. Barrel ageing rounds the wine and knits the components together. It pours a deep, dense red. The nose is ripe and warm, with red and black fruit, garrigue herbs, black pepper and a touch of liquorice. The palate is full and generous at 14.5 percent, with ample fruit, spice and supple tannin carried by enough freshness to balance the weight. The finish is long and peppery. Serve at 16 to 17 degrees, decanted, with grilled and roasted meats and game.
